Shimanek Covered Bridge

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Shimanek Covered Bridge, a significant structure in Oregon's infrastructure history, stands as a testament to our company's commitment to preserving and enhancing historical landmarks. This bridge, spanning 130 feet, was originally completed in 1966, marking the fifth bridge at its location on Thomas Creek in Linn County, near Scio. It replaced a previous structure that had been severely damaged by the Columbus Day Storm of 1962. The Shimanek Covered Bridge holds the distinction of being the longest covered bridge in Linn County and underwent an extensive rehabilitation in 2022.

Our involvement in the 2022 rehabilitation of the Shimanek Covered Bridge reflects our dedication to maintaining and restoring vital infrastructure. The rehabilitation process, led by engineer Kevin Groom, involved significant upgrades including new lower chords, a new substructure, prestressed concrete for the approach spans, as well as new siding, roof system, deck, and rails. This comprehensive renovation ensured the bridge's integrity and functionality for future generations, further enhancing its picturesque setting in the Thomas Creek area, known for its scenic beauty that shifts with each season.

At Marcum & Sons, we take great pride in our role in revitalizing this historic bridge, not only because of its structural and functional importance but also due to its cultural significance in Oregon. Projects like the Shimanek Covered Bridge rehabilitation showcase our deep respect for Oregon's heritage and our commitment to combining historical preservation with modern engineering excellence. Our work on this project is a clear demonstration of our ability to handle complex, high-stakes projects with a blend of precision, care, and respect for history and nature
